OREANDA-NEWS. Russian President Vladimir Putin reacted negatively to the possible cancellation of the limit on foreign players in Russian football. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

The head of state recalled that domestic footballers have not played at the Olympics since 1988. In his opinion, if the restrictions are lifted, the team will not be able to win a ticket to the Games for as many years.

Putin said on this occasion: “I've heard again recently: let's remove the quantitative restrictions on the participation of foreign athletes. Well, it won't be 20 years to play if some foreigners play here, "Putin said at a meeting of the Council for the Development of Physical Culture and Sports.

In 1988, the USSR national team took part in the Summer Olympics. The team won the tournament, beating Brazil in the final. Now, to get a ticket to the Games, the country's youth team must reach the semifinals of the European Championship.

On August 23, the Russian Football Union (RFU) proposed to abandon the limit on legionnaires. The clubs of the elite division of the national championship received letters from the organization.
