OREANDA-NEWSThe Russian national team rose to second place in the ranking of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) in the world championship in Slovakia. 

The victory in the tournament was won by the team of Finland, which in the final beat the Canadians with a score of 3: 1. Bronze medalists were Russians, who beat Czechs in shootouts in the match for the third place - 3: 2. The Swedes, the winners of the previous two world championships, dropped out of the fight at the quarterfinal stage, losing to the Finns. For the fifth consecutive year, the Canadian team is in first place in the ranking (3705 points), the Russians climbed to second place (3640), ahead of the Swedish team (3615 points). Finland moved up from fifth to third place.

At the previous World Cup, which was the first for the Russian national team under the leadership of Ilya Vorobyov, the national team did not win medals for the first time in five years, losing to the Canadians in the quarterfinals. Earlier, Russians won awards in all four tournaments, where the team was led by Oleg Znarok (gold of the 2014 World Cup in Belarus, silver of the 2015 World Cup in the Czech Republic, bronze of the 2016 World Cup in Russia and 2017 World Cup in Germany / France). Departure of the Swedes in the quarterfinal allowed the Russian team following the results of the tournament in Slovakia to get around “Tre Krunur” and climb to second place in the world rankings.
