OREANDA-NEWS. Researchers from Belgium and Spain have found a second mutation that protects human cells from infection by the human immunodeficiency virus. However, this same mutation provokes a rare form of muscular dystrophy, so use it to create a HIV vaccine will not work.

The most discussed mutation over the past year was, of course, CCR5Δ32. The intention of the leader of the experiment of Czankra Hae, she had to make genetically modified girls who were born in the fall of 2018 in China that are resistant to HIV. Later came the information that such studies are prepared and in Russia. At the same time it was found that the CCR5Δ32 can affect mental ability and increase the risk of death. It became clear that this mutation is not the best candidate in order to stop the spread of HIV, even if to imagine that other genetic risk editing the person itself is not responsible.

“The experiment helps us better understand the transport of the virus in the cell. We are in fact still unclear, for example, why in 5% of infected patients do not develop AIDS. In the body, some people have the mechanisms of resistance to infection which is very poorly understood,” – said in an interview with Agence France-Presse Jose Alcami, a virologist from the Institute of Health Carlos III in Madrid. Scientist published the results of a research in the American journal PLOS Pathogens.
