OREANDA-NEWS Gail Lane, a blind British resident, regained her sight thanks to a complex operation during which she had an artificial cornea and part of her own tooth transplanted. This unusual medical case was reported by the Daily Mirror.

Lane, 75, lost her eyesight ten years ago as a result of an autoimmune disease that damaged the lens of her eye. To restore her eyesight, doctors suggested that she undergo osteoadontoceratoprosthesis (OOKP). This is a complex operation that takes place in two stages.

The woman said that first she had a tooth removed and a pin was made from it, to which an artificial cornea was attached. Then, according to her, the resulting optical device was implanted in the cheek, where it remained for three months. As the doctors explained to Lane, connective tissues and blood vessels formed in the new cornea during this time.
