About 750 tons of fuel oil-contaminated soil were removed from Crimea and Sevastopol

OREANDA-NEWS About 750 tons of soil and sand contaminated with fuel oil and petroleum products were collected and removed from the coastline in Crimea and Sevastopol, and the coast with a total length of about 700 kilometers was surveyed, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported.
"In Crimea, more than 525 kilometers of coast from Kerch to the village of Portovoye are being examined; almost 184 kilometers of coastline have been cleared. In total, over 501 tons of contaminated sand and soil were collected; more than 488 tons were removed; over 13 tons remain on the shore. In Sevastopol, 165 kilometers of coast between the villages of Laspi and Andreevka are being examined. More than 244 tons of contaminated sand and soil were collected and exported," the report says.
More than 5,000 people and over 670 pieces of equipment were involved in the elimination of the consequences of the emergency.
On December 15, tankers Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 crashed in the Kerch Strait area, 27 sailors were evacuated, one of them died. According to the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, about 2,4 thousand tons of petroleum products got into the sea. On January 10, a new release of fuel oil occurred from a crack in the stern of Volgoneft-239, which was stranded near the port of Taman, and the bulk of the oil products were collected in three days.
The Black Sea coast of the Krasnodar Territory suffered the most from pollution, and a federal emergency regime was introduced in the Kuban. The first local emissions of fuel oil off the Crimean coast appeared on December 21, in the Kerch region, and subsequently oil products reached Sevastopol. Man-made emergency regimes of a regional and municipal nature have been introduced on the peninsula in the coastal regions.
