OREANDA-NEWS Nvidia Corp. And Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) agreed to transfer part of the proceeds from the sale of AI chips to China to the administration of US President Donald Trump, The Wall Street Journal writes.
This is another example of the White House using new tactics to increase budget revenues, the newspaper notes.
According to sources, the Trump administration will receive 15% of revenue from Nvidia's sales of H20 AI chips as part of a deal with the authorities to obtain approval for the supply of these components to China. Given the high demand for H20 chips, it could be billions of dollars, the WSJ notes.
Similar agreements have been reached with AMD regarding the supply of its MI308 chips, sources say. The details of the agreements are being worked out.
Nvidia has created a specialized version of AI chips for the Chinese market, taking into account the restrictions imposed earlier by Washington on the supply of semiconductor components to China. However, in April, the US authorities banned Nvidia from selling these chips to China without special permission.
The US Department of Commerce began issuing Nvidia licenses to supply the H20 to China on August 8. Over the weekend, the Ministry of Commerce also began issuing licenses for the supply of MI308 chips from AMD to China, according to WSJ sources.
"We comply with the rules established by the US authorities for our work in global markets," Nvidia said. "We have not shipped H20 chips to China for several months now, and we hope that export control rules will allow the United States to compete in China and around the world."
