Andrus Ansip to Participate in European Council
OREANDA-NEWS. June 18, 2008. Prime Minister Andrus Ansip will depart to Brussels to participate in the European Council that starts tomorrow.
The main topic of the summit will be the Lisbon Treaty. If initially, the government heads and heads of state of the European Union were supposed to be given an overview of the circumstances related to the implementation of the treaty, then now, the results of the Irish referendum and potential solutions for the situation will be discussed.
The Irish rejected the new host contract of the European Union at the referendum held last week. The treaty cannot be enforced until ratified by all Member States of the Union.
Another central issue of the agenda of the Council is the price of foodstuffs and fuel. The leaders of the European Union will discuss the effect of price increases on all policy areas of the Union, including development policy, trade policy, common agricultural policy and energy.
The summit will last for two days. Prime Minister Andrus Ansip will arrive back in Estonia late on Friday night.
The Prime Minister will be accompanied on his visit by Villu Kand from the Government Communications Office.
