OREANDA-NEWS. Police in Washington blocked the street outside the Russian embassy in the USA because of a suspicious package.

"A suspicious object was thrown over the fence,"- US law enforcement authorities reported. Several fire trucks drove up to the building of the Russian diplomatic office. Police officers did not allow anyone beyond the cordoned-off area.

Later, the suspicious object was checked. A US Secret Service spokesman explained that it posed no danger. "An explosive ordnance disposal team of the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the site and checked the object. All roadblocks have been lifted,"- he said.

On August 19, an unknown person threw a suspicious object at passers-by in the Times Square area of New York City, causing police to have to evacuate people. NBC television, citing law enforcement sources, reported that a man riding a bicycle threw what appeared to be a metal can at people sitting on the steps, causing people to scatter.

Police closed the blocks of Times Square from 45th Street to 48th Street along Seventh Avenue to passers-by "due to a police investigation". The police department later said that a suspicious object in the square had been checked. It was found to be non-threatening, after which the cordon was lifted.
