OREANDA-NEWS  According to the results of the first five months of 2023, car imports to Russia reached 171.5 thousand, which is almost five times higher than in pre-crisis 2021. Kommersant writes about this with reference to the data of the agency "Autostat" and the Federal Customs Service (FCS).

Compared with January-May of last year, car purchases abroad increased 2.7 times. The monthly dynamics is determined by the ruble exchange rate. In April, compared with March, imports decreased by 9.1 percent due to the weakening of the Russian currency, and in May - increased by 51.1 percent, to 51.2 thousand units.

The vast majority of imports — 70.5 percent — come from Chinese cars. In five months, their deliveries reached 120.9 thousand units. Their share in the total sales of new passenger cars (the statistics include the Chinese Haval assembled in Russia) was 46 percent, a year earlier — 17 percent. European brands account for five percent, Korean brands — eight percent, and Japanese brands — six percent, although their official deliveries have been stopped.

The customs statistics of the People's Republic of China reports that in April shipments of cars to Russia in monetary terms amounted to 976.9 million dollars, which was a historical maximum. In May, they dropped to 809.4 million, but until 2023, the monthly maximum was $227.8 million in January 2022.
