OREANDA-NEWS Russia has displaced Germany from the 5th place in the world in terms of beer production, the Handelsblatt newspaper reported on Tuesday, citing the annual report of the largest German hop producer BarthHaas.
"Beer production in Russia increased by about 9%, to 9.1 billion liters. In Germany, it fell by 1%, to 8.4 billion," the article says.
In a five-year-old report, Germany's gap from Russia was 1.4 billion liters, the newspaper writes.
China ranks first in the world in beer production with 34 billion liters, and second behind the United States with 18 billion. Brazil and Mexico occupy the third and fourth places with 14.7 and 14.5 billion liters, respectively. At the same time, global beer production in 2024 fell to 187.5 billion, the article says.
Many small German breweries are experiencing financial difficulties, and overall beer consumption in Western countries is decreasing due to a decrease in the purchasing power of the population and competition with other beverages, the newspaper writes.
The growth of beer production in Russia, in turn, is associated with a decrease in beer imports and an increase in domestic production, the article says.
