OREANDA-NEWS. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR, Strasbourg Court) declared illegal the blocking of the portals Kasparov.ru (this resource is led by chess grandmaster, world champion of 1985–2000, Garry Kasparov), Grani.ru, and the website EJ.ru of the literary edition Ezhednevnyy Zhurnal (Daily Newspaper) by the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media of the Russian Federation.

According to judges’ decision, the blocking occurred before the content contained on the sites was declared illegal, which violates the provisions of the articles 10 (freedom of expression) and 13 (right to an effective remedy) of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The claimants are Kasparov, LLC Flavus, and LLC Mediafocus. The owners of Grani.ru and EJ.ru requested 20 thousand euros each as compensation for non-pecuniary damage; Kasparov demanded 10 thousand euros. The Strasbourg Court decided to pay all plaintiffs 10 thousand euros each.
