OREANDA-NEWS  The Russian government is ready to restrict food exports if the situation does not favor the stability of the domestic market, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev said at the XVI Congress of the Union of Milk Producers in Moscow on Wednesday.

"Control over ensuring the economic availability of basic types of food continues. And if the situation is not in favor of the stability of our own market, we have leverage. In particular, they relate to possible export restrictions, " he said. "But you must admit, I don't want to lose the markets that we have been conquering together for so many years overnight."

"But I will say once again that the priority for the state is obvious: it is the full provision of food to our citizens. At the same time, we, of course, rely on the domestic manufacturer and increase self-sufficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to further increase the production of our own products, systematically moving towards achieving the benchmark of the Food Safety Doctrine for milk," the Deputy Prime Minister said.

Speaking about the current situation, he said that the indicators of the dairy industry are steadily growing. According to preliminary data, milk production amounted to 34 million tons in 2024. "Year-on-year, this is plus 200 thousand tons, which corresponds to the previously announced forecasts," he said. "Traditionally, the largest share - about 70% of the total volume - falls on the organized sector."

According to him, exports are also growing. "Today, the markets of more than 90 countries are available for our milk and dairy products. In 2024, several more were opened, in particular, Kuwait, Bangladesh and Syria," the Deputy Prime Minister said.

Nevertheless, Patrushev stressed, the most important driver of growth is the domestic demand for dairy products, which is growing every year. The average per capita consumption increased by more than 2% last year.

"Accordingly, our common task is to take this into account and fully provide the market with all types of goods at affordable prices. Balance is very important here. It is impossible to increase the production of one category to the detriment of another. Everyone should closely monitor the demand," he stressed. "Otherwise, dear colleagues, we will have to intervene." He recalled that a tariff exemption for imports of up to 25 thousand tons of butter is in effect until June 15 this year.
