OREANDA-NEWS The European Commission (EC) has proposed extending anti—Russian sanctions by a simple majority of the member states of the European Union (EU), bypassing Hungary. This is reported by Politico.
"The new document of the European Commission proposed to change the rules for extending sanctions from unanimous approval to a qualified majority. This is necessary in order to reduce the risk of Hungary blocking this process," the newspaper reports.
On September 22, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Budapest opposes EU sanctions and restrictions on oil supplies from Russia. He noted that the adoption of such a decision could jeopardize the energy security of the republic.
On September 10, EC President Ursula von der Leyen, during her annual State of the Union address to the European Parliament, proposed to abolish the rule of unanimous voting in the community for making foreign policy decisions.
