OREANDA-NEWS. June 5, 2012. The Minister of Public Works and Communications of Paraguay and representative of the President Pro Tempore of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), Cecilio Perez Bordon, during his speech at the III South American Energy Council, urged his colleagues and delegations from member countries to consolidate the recovery of Latin American energy sovereignty.

"In the decade of the 70s asymmetric treaties were signed which sealed an exclusive mode of binational integration, substantially limiting the exercise of sovereign rights of the state and people of Paraguay," said Bordon.

On the other hand, he asked his counterparts and representatives of the 12 multi-state bloc countries to move towards the adoption of legal instruments required for a formal strategy on energy, for South American regions. It also provides for joint efforts to reach consensus, facing the realization of the South American Energy Treaty.

He recalled that Paraguay supplies 87 percent of the electricity that is exported in the region, this being a scarce resource and vital for the development of national economies.

Finally, the Minister Bordon reiterated that the meeting is aimed at consolidating efforts among members of the bloc, to achieve energy integration in Latin America: "The meeting that brings us here today must have as main objective to move towards an integration process that promotes the sustainable development of our nations.”
