OREANDA-NEWS In 2026, Europe increased purchases of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to data from the European analytical center Bruegel.

Since the beginning of the year, fuel supplies have increased by 10 percent, from 15 to 16.5 billion cubic meters. In March, purchases of Russian LNG updated the record for the entire history of Bruegel observations since 2019, amounting to 2.459 billion cubic meters. After that, they decreased slightly, but continued to stay at a high level relative to previous years. As a result, import volumes fell to the lowest level this year — 682 million cubic meters. In September, Russian gas imports to Europe increased 1.6 times month-on-month, to 1.088 billion cubic meters.

In September, LNG supplies to Europe from the Middle East, amid the suspension of production in Qatar and the extension of the force majeure period, turned out to be zero for the fifth month in a row. In January-September, shipments fell 3.3 times, amounting to 2.601 billion cubic meters. Imports from the United States and Trinidad and Tobago totaled 7.47 billion cubic meters (minus 6.3 percent) in September.

Since the beginning of the year, the cost of gas in the EU has increased by 259.31 percent, becoming the most expensive commodity in the world.

In October, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen suggested that EU leaders consider the possibility of creating strategic gas reserves amid the growing risks associated with winter supplies.
