Europe has updated the anti-record for pumping gas into storage facilities

OREANDA-NEWS Gas injection into European underground storage facilities (UGS) has decreased to a minimum level, Gazprom said.
"On May 20th, another anti-record of gas injection into European underground storage facilities was recorded. According to Gas Infrastructure Europe, the replenishment of reserves fell to the lowest level for these days in the entire history of observations," the publication says.
At the same time, Germany and France, the largest economies in Europe, switched to net extraction of gas from UGS facilities during the injection season - the amount of extraction exceeded the injection rate.
According to GIE, on the gas day of May 20-21, the UGS occupancy rate in the European Union was 36.99 percent, which was the lowest since 2022.
In January, the EU Council approved a regulation on phasing out purchases of Russian fuel. The ban on LNG imports under short-term contracts came into force on April 25, and for long-term contracts it is planned from January 1, 2027. The embargo on pipeline gas will be effective from June 17, 2026 under short-term contracts, and from November 1, 2027 under long-term contracts.
As Vladimir Putin stated, it may be beneficial for Russia to stop supplies to European countries as soon as possible, since they are already planning to abandon them. Instead, he instructed the government to explore the possibility of exporting gas to promising markets.
