OREANDA-NEWS The Armenian (Metsamor) NPP will be connected to the republic's energy system after the completion of scheduled preventive maintenance work, Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia David Khudatyan said.

"After the successful completion of the planned preventive maintenance works for 2026, on September 1, the second power unit of the NPP was restarted and connected to the unified energy system of Armenia. During the work, about 20 important measures have been implemented aimed at improving the reliability, safety and efficiency of the power unit," Khudatyan wrote on the social network.

According to him, the repair work lasted 153 days according to the schedule.

"The power unit is operating normally, a gradual increase in capacity is carried out in accordance with established technological requirements," the minister said.

The current Armenian nuclear power plant is one of the main sources of electricity in the country. The plant has a single unit with a first-generation VVER-440 reactor, which is supplied by TVEL (part of Rosatom).

At the end of December 2025, Rosatom handed over to Armenia a package of detailed proposals for the construction of a new nuclear power plant in the republic.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said earlier that Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev would visit the republic in September to present Russia's proposals for the construction of a new nuclear power plant.
