OREANDA-NEWS In the first five months of 2025, the total volume of Russian pipeline gas supplies to Hungary increased by 26 percent compared to the same period in 2024 and reached 1.3 billion euros in monetary terms. This is reported by TASS with reference to data from the Statistical Service of the European Union (Eurostat).
As a result, Hungary has become the leader in purchasing this type of fuel from Russia among all EU countries. Greece's closest pursuer lagged sharply behind, importing pipeline gas from Russia in the amount of 678 million euros during the reporting period. Slovakia rounded out the top three with a score of 310 million. In general, in January-May, EU purchases amounted to 2.55 billion euros. In annual terms, the figure decreased by about 150 million.
After the sabotage of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline network (SS-2), the closure by the Polish authorities of its section of the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline and the suspension of transit through Ukraine, the Turkish Stream remained the only real route for the delivery of Russian natural gas to the EU. Its southern branch supplies fuel to Hungary and Slovakia, among others. Russia's gas payment was the last to return to 46 million euros in May after a historic low of 141 thousand euros. In addition, it was noted that by the end of the year, Bratislava expects to receive over 1.5 billion cubic meters of fuel from the Russian Federation through Hungary.
Earlier, these two European countries opposed the plan promoted by the European Commission (EC) to completely abandon the import of Russian energy resources by the end of 2027. The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the European country, Peter Szijjarto, noted that such initiatives contradict the economic interests of Budapest and Bratislava. The damage to Slovakia alone from the termination of relations with Gazprom was estimated by the local energy operator SPP at about 16 billion euros. Despite this, the EC continues to insist on the need to provide national plans for abandoning Russian gas by the end of 2025.
