Dell is done with Android - again

Trade and servicesIT, Media

OREANDA-NEWS. July 04, 2016. Dell made two of the very best Android tablets you could buy -- until now. The company is no longer selling its Android-based Venue tablets, and it won't be replacing them with new ones.

As of today, Dell isn't selling any Android products at all.

"The slate tablet market is oversaturated and is experiencing declining demand from consumers, so we've decided to discontinue the Android-based Venue tablet line," said a Dell spokesman.

Instead, Dell will focus its efforts on hybrid Windows devices, some of which also carry the same Venue branding as the former Android tablets.

Dell also won't be upgrading its existing devices to newer versions of Android, according to that same spokesman. It'll honor existing warranties, and that's all.

This isn't the first time that Dell has tried Android and later given up. Originally, it started with phones. The first device was the 5-inch Dell Streak, in 2010, followed by the Dell Venue and Venue Pro. Dell discontinued its phone efforts, and temporarily abandoned the Venue name, in 2012.

According to a Dell spokesman, the company could do more with Android in the years to come. "Although this removes Android-based products from our current portfolio, we're not closing any doors and remain open to supporting Android in the future."

PCWorld first reported the news that Dell would discontinue its Android products.
