OREANDA-NEWS By the end of 2024, Russia increased butter imports by 9.8 percent compared to 2023. This is reported by TASS with reference to Rosselkhoznadzor data.

The ministry clarified that in 12 months, a total of 134.7 thousand tons of this type of dairy products were imported into the country. For comparison, in 2023, the figure was 122.7 thousand. Belarus became the main supplier. A total of 106.4 thousand tons of butter were imported from this country to Russia.

In addition, last year, access was opened for the supply of these products to Russia from Uzbekistan and India. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) also turned out to be one of the important exporters. Access to the Russian market for a product from this Middle Eastern country was opened back in 2022, the Rosselkhoznadzor concluded.

In 2024, butter turned out to be one of the most expensive socially significant food products in Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that retail prices had risen by 33-34 percent in 12 months. He attributed this trend to a number of factors, including crop failures of major crops due to adverse weather conditions in key agricultural regions, as well as increased consumption in the domestic market.

Against the background of a sharp rise in the price of butter, the Russian authorities turned to the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) for help. At the end of November, the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) approved a tariff exemption for duty-free import of up to 25 thousand tons of these dairy products into the Russian Federation. Such a relaxation will be in effect until June 15, 2025 and is expected to help avoid the risks of oil shortages and further price increases in the Russian market.
