Freight traffic between Russia and China has increased dramatically

OREANDA-NEWS According to the results of the first five months of 2026, the total volume of truck transportation between Russia and China increased by 35 percent compared to the same period in 2025. The sharp increase in the indicator is reported by TASS with reference to data from the Ministry of Transport (Ministry of Transport) of the Russian Federation.
Moscow and Beijing, the ministry noted, continue to increase contacts in this area. In 2026, the parties agreed to issue 65,000 mutual permits for truck transportation, and in 2027, according to preliminary estimates, 138.85 thousand each, the Ministry of Transport stated.
The volume of not only freight, but also railway transportation is increasing, the ministry noted. According to the results of last year, the latter indicator increased by 6.3 percent. In May 2026, the Ministry of Industry recalled, the parties signed an agreement on the construction of a second main track on the Zabaikalsk—Manchuria section. This will allow an additional 11 million tons of cargo to be transported by 2030, the Ministry of Transport concluded.
The Transaltai railway may become another driver of the growth of freight traffic between the two countries. Kommersant previously reported on the resumption of discussions in the government on the implementation of this megaproject, citing a source. The railway, the newspaper's interlocutor explained, will allow access to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. This project is considered by the Russian authorities as an alternative to the southern sea routes between Europe and Asia.
