OREANDA-NEWS  Alcohol consumption in Russia over the past 12 months as of June has fallen by 0.44 liters, to 7.62 liters per capita, which was the lowest value since 1997-1998. This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to statistics.

However, the agency notes that in the period up to 2008, alcohol consumption data is based on a limited database that includes only official sales. However, in the 1990s, a significant part of the market - about two thirds — was occupied by the illegal sector, including moonshine, which originated in the Soviet years.

Over the past 18 years, statistics have been trying to take into account total consumption, and during this period, current data indicate its lowest level.

According to official data, they drink the least in the North Caucasus. So, in Chechnya, the figure is 0.02 liters per person, in Ingushetia — 0.62 liters, and in Dagestan — 0.9 liters. In Moscow and St. Petersburg, they consume 4.6 liters and 5.96 liters each, and in the Sverdlovsk region - 9.98 liters of alcohol per year.

Earlier, Maxim Chernihiv, associate professor at the Presidential Academy in St. Petersburg, head of the Alcohol Market Professionals Club (KPARC), criticized the data of the Federal Service for Alcohol Control (RATK) on the reduction of alcohol consumption in the country in recent years, stressing that they relate only to legal alcohol-containing products.

At the same time, in his opinion, due to the rapid increase in alcohol prices in stores, the share of illegal products is growing, and besides, Russians increasingly prefer to produce alcohol on their own. Alexander Stavtsev, head of the WineRetail information center, also confirmed that data on alcohol consumption had been transferred.
