OREANDA-NEWSWashington’s imposition of sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is a belated and ineffective measure. Such an assessment is given in an article published on Saturday in Forbes magazine.

As noted in the material, "sanctions were probably late for about a year". The article states that the construction of the Nord Stream 2 has now been almost completed. "These sanctions are belated and useless. They will not be liked even by those who hate Russia", the author of the article emphasizes. He believes that Germany and France are "increasingly annoyed by the new Cold War with Russia".

According to the publication, among the partners of Gazprom are European companies, "which cannot be intimidated by US anti-Russian steps dictated by geopolitics". “Washington knows this”, the article states. According to its assessment, the EU countries are largely dependent on natural gas supplies from Russia. It's cheaper than the liquefied natural gas that the United States can offer, and sanctions don't change that. The development of alternative energy in the EU, as noted in the material, in the short term will not lead to a decrease in demand for gas from the Russian Federation.

On December 20, US President Donald Trump signed the US defense budget providing for sanctions against companies participating in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream pipelines.
