"Kim Yong Hyun tried to commit suicide in a detention center in eastern Seoul, where he is being held on charges of rebellion related to the investigation into the earlier imposition of martial law," the report said.
The agency notes that the representative of the correctional institution informed the parliament about this during the parliamentary hearings.
As reported, on Wednesday, Kim Yong Hyun was officially arrested on charges of helping President Yun Seok-yeol organize a rebellion and provoke riots "to undermine the national constitution" by briefly imposing martial law.
The prosecutor's office issued an arrest warrant for Kim Yong Hyun, accusing him of "important actions" during the rebellion and abuse of power.
The president of South Korea himself has been declared a suspect, he is forbidden to travel abroad.
According to South Korean law, the head of state is immune from prosecution while in office, with the exception of charges of rebellion.
According to Yonhap, police raided the presidential administration and the main police department on Wednesday as part of an investigation into the imposition of martial law by Yun Suk El. The president himself was not in the administration building at the time of the searches, the agency said.
