OREANDA-NEWS   The number of refugees seeking international protection in the European Union (EU) has reached a record level since the European migration crisis in 2015. This is reported by The Washington Post with reference to representatives of the European Asylum Bureau.

According to representatives of the bureau, in August 2022, about 84,500 people applied for asylum in 27 EU countries, as well as in Norway and Switzerland. In addition, about 255 thousand more refugees, most of whom came from Ukraine, have requested temporary asylum. The number of people seeking help has increased by 16 percent since July of this year.

Syrian refugees fleeing the war overflowed European migration centers in 2015, which provoked one of the largest political crises in the EU. In August of this year, the number of refugees was approximately half of the number of migrants arriving in Europe monthly in 2015.
