OREANDA-NEWS Romanian President Nicusor Dan expressed his personal support for unification with Moldova, but stressed that he would respect the will of its citizens.

Dan makes an official visit to Germany on July 18 at the invitation of its President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

"Personally, I wish for unification with Moldova, but I fully respect the will of the citizens of the neighboring republic," the Romanian leader said in an interview with the German edition of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Dan stated that currently about 35% of Moldovan citizens support the idea of uniting the two countries. "As long as a significant part of the population of the neighboring country supports the current form of the state, Romania will not take any steps. About one million Moldovans also have Romanian citizenship. We will support them at various levels," the Romanian leader said.
