OREANDA-NEWS   The European Union will confiscate the assets of oligarchs from Russia on the basis of the introduction of criminal liability for circumventing anti-Russian sanctions, European Commissioner for Justice and Rule of Law Didier Reynders said in a statement. His statement is published on the website of the European Council.

"It will become possible to criminalize circumvention of sanctions and on this basis receive court sentences and confiscate assets of individuals and companies," he said on December 9 during a meeting of the European Council at the level of interior ministers.
Reynders added that the main topic of the meeting will be the conflict in Ukraine. According to him, the ministers will discuss ways to administer justice against Russians "responsible for war crimes."

Earlier it was reported that the European Union is preparing to adopt a directive allowing the confiscation of Russian assets in the countries of the bloc in case of circumvention of sanctions.

By April 2022, EU countries have already confiscated assets worth about 30 billion euros (in particular, yachts, villas, art objects belonging to individuals or legal entities from the Russian Federation).
