OREANDA-NEWS The Europeans have overpaid 19 billion euros (about 1.67 trillion rubles) for energy due to the conflict in the Middle East. The losses of families due to the war with Iran were calculated in the Izvestia newspaper.
Due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the subsequent increase in energy prices, EU households spent an additional 19 billion euros on the so-called energy basket from March to June. Changes in prices for electricity and fuel for cars were compared with those in February.
There were about 4.1 billion euros of additional expenses in March, 5.8 billion euros in April, 5.2 billion euros in May and 3.8 billion euros in June. At the same time, the volume of consumption did not change — Europeans continued to buy the same amount of energy and fuel, despite rising prices. France had the largest expenses during this period — 4.3 billion euros, Germany — 3.6 billion euros, and Italy — 3.36 billion euros.
The calculation does not take into account business expenses and indirect price increases for products, air tickets, public transport and services, which manufacturers and suppliers could transfer increased energy costs to.
If the conflict continues, in 2026, European families will need about 88.8 billion euros (more than 7.8 trillion rubles) in additional costs to maintain the same standard of living.
Earlier, Tino Krupalla, co-chairman of the opposition right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, said that the confrontational policy of the United States and the European Union towards Russia and Iran is depriving Europe of inexpensive energy resources. According to him, Germany needs gas storage facilities filled to the limit and an energy reserve. In this regard, he called for finding ways to resolve conflicts peacefully. "We should not put up with or worsen crises and wars, but rather prevent them and put an end to them," he said. The Europeans have overpaid 19 billion euros (about 1.67 trillion rubles) for energy due to the conflict in the Middle East.
