OREANDA-NEWS Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a conversation with young scientists who became laureates of the Presidential Prize in Science and innovation for 2024, discussed the potential of cattle breeding in agriculture and became interested in the fact that young bulls can now be raised in Russia weighing up to a ton.
After the award ceremony, Putin asked Elena Korochkina from St. Petersburg State University of Veterinary Medicine, who is developing innovative methods for the effective realization of the genetic and reproductive potential of animal husbandry in Russia, about the development of meat and dairy farming.
"I looked at the information that you have both meat and dairy farming. That is, we will have steers, such real ones. How much will the bulls weigh?"- asked Putin.
"Up to one ton for sure. They gain up to a ton of live weight," Korochkina replied.
Putin asked how long it takes for the bulls to gain such a mass. Korochkina explained that they gain up to 500 kilograms per year. Then they continue to increase their weight, and scientists begin to use their reproductive potential.
"It's really interesting, honestly, it really matters for solving all kinds of food issues. We have never had such things before, so that they weigh up to a ton, we bought everything abroad," Putin stressed.
In addition, Putin and the scientist discussed dairy farming. Korochkina said that in the Russian Federation it is necessary to create a breeding core of Holstein cows, including this will increase the quality of cheese production.
Putin noted that earlier Russian agricultural producers had bought certain breeds of cows mainly from Germany and Denmark, and asked which ones were better.
"I think the Holsteins are the future. We need to focus on the development of dairy farming and the breeding of Holstein cattle," the scientist replied. "This is the only way we can be genetically independent in terms of dairy farming in Russia," Korochkina added. According to her, it will take 5-10 years to achieve independence.
