OREANDA-NEWS The Arctic ice has melted to its lowest levels in January. Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, told the TASS news agency about the impact of climate change on the state of the "Earth's ice cap."
"According to Copernicus (European Earth Remote Sensing and Mapping Service — approx. "The tapes.<url>"), in January there was a minimum of Arctic ice, that is, the recorded area of ice in the Arctic was a record minimum for January," the forecaster said. Thus, the January data broke the previous record of 2018, when their area was 200 thousand square kilometers.
The area of ice in Antarctica has also decreased abnormally. In the southern polis, the indicator dropped below the average by 5 percent. At the same time, such anti-records are recorded for the second month in a row. Even against the background of 2021-2023, the extent of ice at the poles has noticeably decreased. "This, of course, suggests that global warming processes are proceeding very quickly, despite the development of natural factors such as La Niña," Vilfand explained.
Earlier, meteorologists recognized 2024 as the hottest year in the history of instrumental observations. The highest temperature in history was recorded on July 22, 2024, when the average daily temperature on the planet was 17.16 degrees.
