OREANDA-NEWS The number of Russians with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is growing not only due to the detection of new cases of the disease, but also due to the increase in their life expectancy due to ongoing therapy. About this, explaining the increase in the number of infected, "Lenta.<url>" was told by Natalia Ladnaya, senior researcher at the specialized Scientific Research Department for the Prevention and Control of AIDS at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor.
She stressed that HIV remains incurable, but the set of measures taken within the framework of the state strategy to combat the spread of infection until 2030 has allowed us to achieve positive changes in dynamics. So, in 2025, the incidence decreased by 13.4 percent compared to 2024, amounting to 31 new cases, which is 40 percent lower than the average annual level.
The Candidate of Biological Sciences noted that along with a decrease in the number of newly diagnosed HIV cases, the coverage of the surveyed population is growing. "So, in 2025, more than 53.8 million residents of our country were tested for HIV, which is one third of the total population," she said.
