OREANDA-NEWS A new earthquake has occurred in Istanbul, RIA Novosti correspondent reports.

At about 20:33 (coincides with Moscow time), several strong tremors were felt in the west of the city, but less powerful than on Wednesday.

According to seismologists from the Turkish Disaster Management Authority (AFAD), the magnitude was 4.3. The source was located at a depth of seven kilometers in the Sea of Marmara opposite the Buyukcekmece area.

In turn, the Kandilli Observatory estimated the magnitude at 4.6.
The districts of Istanbul closest to the epicenter, Esenyurt and Buyukcekmec, are home to more than one million and 300 thousand people, respectively.

On April twenty-third, an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 occurred in the Marmara Sea, followed by aftershocks. According to the Turkish authorities, 236 people were injured, while there were no casualties and large-scale destruction.

One of the branches of the North Anatolian Fault runs through the Marmara Sea. According to Halyuk Eyidogan, professor of seismology and member of the Council of Scientists of the Istanbul City Hall on earthquake issues, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude above 7.0 is possible in this area, the economic consequences of which will be felt by the whole of Turkey.

According to calculations by the Istanbul Mayor's Office, at least 90,000 buildings will collapse in the city at magnitude 7.5, and about four and a half million people may need temporary housing. Insurance companies estimate that the damage from such an earthquake will exceed $325 billion.
