He passed away on February 8. However, local authorities confirmed this information only on February 10. The cause of death of the scientist is not reported. He was 89 years old.

Montagnier's statements made after he was awarded the Nobel Prize often provoked a negative reaction from his colleagues. The scientist was an opponent of vaccination and opposed mandatory vaccinations in children. In 2017, more than a hundred medical academics openly condemned his position, calling it "dangerous to health".

During the coronavirus pandemic, Montagnier said that COVID-19 appeared on the basis of HIV. This statement is not confirmed by any serious scientific research. In addition, he participated in anti-vaccination campaigns.
