The WHO Believes That a Hybrid of "Delta" and "Omicron" Could Appear with a Laboratory Error

OREANDA-NEWS. World Health Organization (WHO) expert Maria van Kerkhove suggested that the alleged hybrid of the delta and omicron coronavirus strains could result from a laboratory error.
"The deltacron strain was highly likely to have been generated by contamination during sequencing," Kerkhove wrote on her Twitter account on Monday. She previously stated that as "more and more people come into contact with each other, without using social and health [restrictive] measures, as well as against the background of the spread of influenza and coronavirus, there will be an emergence of coinfections."
The expert asked not to use terms such as "deltacron", "flurona" or "flurone" to denote the simultaneous circulation of different viruses, since, in her words, they mean "the combination of viruses or strains, and this does not happen." Kerkhove recommended getting vaccinated against coronavirus and influenza, keeping distance, wearing masks, avoiding crowds and regularly ventilating the premises.
On Saturday, Leontios Kostrikis, head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology at the University of Cyprus, said that the research group he leads has discovered a new variant of the coronavirus on the island, which is a hybrid of the delta and omicron strains. Researchers have named the new strain "deltacron".
