OREANDA-NEWS. Unit 3 of Leningrad NPP was launched in Sept 1979 for 30 years. In July 2007 the unit was stopped for modernization and extension of service life: upgrading of special systems, replacement of some elements and modules, etc. The project is to be finished in Feb 2008, reported the press-centre of Rosenergoatom.

Unit 3 of Leningrad NPP is a unit of the second generation. It is an upgraded version of units 1 and 2 and does not need as deep modernization as the first two units did, the director of Leningrad NPP V.Lebedev said. “We are doing less work and spending less money. Together with the chief designer and the general contractor, we have analyzed units 3 and 4 and have seen that their lives can be extended for 20 rather than 15 years.”

Presently, Leningrad NPP is installing a complex of dry spent nuclear fuel storage and a complex of radioactive waste treatment and storage. This project will also be discussed at the conference.
