OREANDA-NEWS. July 14, 2008. Rustelecom Information and Analysis Company organized a round table entitled "The Broad Band of the Internet" which took place in the Grand Hotel Europe in St.-Petersburg. The event focussed on the analysis of main trends in broadband internet market and aimed to create the preconditions for the positive attitude to new technologies and services among the end users.

The participants of the round table included the top managers of 4 internet providers of St.-Petersburg: OJSC North-West Telecom, Web Plus Company, Eltel Company, OJSC TKT and representatives of the leading St.-Petersburg media and information agencies.

Oleg Popov,   deputy CEO and financial director, OJSC NWT,   delivered a talk “From phones to the Triple Play: the evolution of the last mile”, where he presented a brief history of telecommunications from a traditional wired phone to the modern data transmission services and the conception of the future development of Triple Play services using PON technology. The OJSC NWT started the trial use of these services in April this year (see press-release of 21 April 2008).

In his presentation Mr Popov noted: "Our company consistently invests significant resources into the development of multiservice networks and Triple Pay services. We started providing Triple Pay services in St.-Petersburg already in autumn 2008 and in 2009 they were expanded to other regions of the North-West Federal District. The new set of modern telecommunications services will be based on new traffic means: optical network (PON) in subscriber's flats and SoftSwitch instead of standard exchanges. Furthermore this project will contribute to substantial digitization of the OJSC NWT network, allow providing new generation of services and offer solution to such problems as shared service lines.

The participants of the round table discussed the rapid development of IT and telecommunications in St.-Petersburg and the NWFD over the past few years, expansion of new technologies which are already available to the customers and the improvement of the content quality and service levels.
