OREANDA-NEWS. April 18, 2011. As a result of the Rostelecom merger, the total length of backbone networks of regional telecommunications operators and Dagsvyazinform after their integration will amount to about 500,000 km, while the total length of local access networks exceeds 2.5 mln km.  This news was announced by Svyazinvest general director Vadim Semenov, speaking at a press conference devoted to the formation of the merged company and the beginning of technological integration of the networks of Rostelecom and the merged regional telecom operators.

Mr. Semenov pointed out that “such a large-scale network is not only the unrivaled leader in terms of total length and transmission capacity in Russia, but is also one of the largest telecommunications networks in the entire world”.

As pointed out at this press conference Rostelecom President Alexander Provotorov, “in order to meet the steadily rising needs of the Internet access market and data transmission services by 2014 the transmission capacity of the merged Rostelecom should exceed 6 Tbs.  This is why the development of the company’s backbone network is one of our strategic investment priorities”.

Provotorov emphasized that Rostelecom is the unrivaled leader of Russia’s backbone traffic transit market, and the Internet access market with a total capacity of customer connectivity exceeding 1 Tbs, which far exceeds the performance of any other Russian telecom company.

In addition, Rostelecom is a leader in terms of Internet service quality, long enjoying the top rating by international agency Renesys, the most authoritative rating in the global telecommunications industry.
