OREANDA-NEWS. May 26, 2011. Throughout four month of this year Klaipeda Port handled 12,0 million tons of sea born cargo, the overall cargo handling increase reached even 20,8 % if to compare with the corresponding period of the previous year, reported the press-centre of Klaipeda Port.
 
According to cargo handling turnover in Easter Coast Baltic Ports in January – April of 2011 Klaipeda Port handled the largest cargo volumes and left behind the neighbouring Riga and Ventspils Ports, but slightly left behind the Joint Port of Tallinn. The common cargo handling results of Klaipeda Port and Butinge Terminal made 14,6 million tons in January – April of 2011 and exceeded the handling turnover of the Joint Port of Tallinn by 1,78 million litas.
 
The highest increase in cargo turnover during four month of this year comparing with the corresponding period of 2010 was reached due to increased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemical fertilizers (+966,7 thousand tons), Ro – Ro cargo (+314,6 thousand tons), containerized cargo (+283,6 thousand tons), liquid natural and chemical fertilizers (+262,3 thousand tons) and oil products (+161,4 thousand tons),
 
In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of handling of general cargo were the handling turnover was 3 798,6 thousand tons (31,6 percent of overall port handling) increased mostly (24,8 percent).Handling turnover of dry and bulk cargo increased by 24,2 percent, in total 4 627,1thousand tons (38,5 percent) were handled. Liquefied cargo handling increased by 12,9percent, volumes of this cargogroup were3 584,9thousand tons (29,9 percent).

Klaipeda Port has further maintained its position of the leading Port in containerized cargo handling in the region of the Baltic countries. 129 422 TEU, i.e. more by 46,7 percent comparing to the correspondingperiodof 2010 ( the increase made41 172 TEU) were handled in Klaipeda Port in January – April of 2011.
