OREANDA-NEWS. April 18, 2013. The Government has an intention to increase volumes of power energy produced in Ukraine by hydroelectric power plants (HPP) up to 15%. This was declared by Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov in the course of visiting of Kyiv hydroelectric power station.

“We have a huge program of development of national hydropower, possess all opportunities to upgrade hydroelectric power stations. We have plants that produce all necessary facilities for their modernization. We want to increase, in synergy with the World Bank, the capacity of HPP in the part of hydropower produced in the country up to 15% approximately,” Mykola Azarov said.

He added that owing to this normal balance of electric power produced by nuclear power plants, thermal power plants and hydroelectric power plants would be ensured.

According to the Premier, hydroelectric power plants were built over 40 years ago, so they need complex modernization.

Pursuant to the Energy strategy up to 2030, maneuverable capacity of hydroelectric power plants on the Dnipro will be increased by 10%, while the term of their exploitation was continued up to 40 years. Thus far, over 50% of complex reconstruction of the HPP has been fulfilled.

Now preparation to the start of building of Kakhovka HPP-2 is finalized with the capacity of 270 MW and Kanev hydro-accumulating power station with the capacity of 1000 MW. Also, by the end of year it is planned to launch the second aggregate of Dniester hydro- accumulating power station, which will become the largest in Europe and the sixth in capacity in the world. It will enable to significantly enlarge export possibility of energy system of the country, to regulate the schedule of loading in the energy system in compliance with standards of the ratio of base and peak capacities.
