OREANDA-NEWS. November 11, 2013. This is provided for by amendments to the law on road fund and to the regulation on establishment and use of road fund, which passed the first reading in parliament.

According to one of the lawmakers, Vice-Speaker of Parliament Liliana Palihovici, up to date the money of the road fund has been used to maintain and repair national primary and secondary roads only. Although by law in force maintenance and rehabilitation of public roads (roads within places of population) may be spent on up to 50% of the means of the road fund, their quality leaves much to desire and some of them, as a rule, are impassable in cold spells and after heavy rains.

About 68% of all the roads of Moldova, at a total length of 6,866 kilometres, are public ones, or, in other words, the roads and streets than run through towns and villages. Some of them were last time repaired 10 or even 20 years ago. Their maintenance and rehabilitation have been shouldered on local authorities, whereas money of the Road Fund has been spent to repair national primary and secondary roads.

Under current conditions backing maintenance of public roads is rather difficult task for local authorities, given the modest sizes of local budgets. The amendments will make it possible to spend money of the road fund on rehabilitation of both: national and public roads and streets. Thanks to them, the quality of roads within towns and villages of Moldova will be enhanced, passenger transportation will be safer and social facilities, such as hospitals, city halls, schools, will become more available for people.
