OREANDA-NEWS. NPO Saturn successfully completed the research and development campaign dedicated to the creation of a new small-sized gas turbine engine. A certificate of completion of the state bench tests was signed by the customer. The formal award of the state bench tests completion certificate took place at NPO Saturn on 12 December 2013 during the extended State commission session.

According to Yuriy Shmotin, NPO Saturn head of design, “the completion of development of the prospective small-sized gas turbine engine is a landmark event for the company. For the first time Russia saw the creation of a completely “electric” gas turbine engine surpassing any existing analogs. A certificate of completion of the state bench tests was signed by the customer, which means that the engine is ready to enter its serial production phase.”

According to the specifications, very strict requirements were posed to weight, dimensions and performance of the new engine. Due to the need to respect all such requirements, the engine design incorporated a series of non-traditional solutions requiring long and painstaking work of design engineers and inventors.

At the moment the company's research and development bureau is fitted with the state-of-the-art pilot production capabilities and modern test infrastructure which enables it to ensure an end-to-end cycle when it comes to new types of products ranging from computational-analytical works to producing first prototypes and running certification tests.

In 2012 the NPO Saturn design office was designated the principal design office of United Engine Corporation. That fact served as legitimate proof of the high competence level of the NPO Saturn employees in the field of designing gas turbine engines of military, civil and industrial application. Over the past decade more than ten new developments of NPO Saturn have received type certificates and successfully passed state bench tests as well as flight tests.

Presently only the R&D part of the design office employs over 800 people including 10 doctors of sciences, 40 candidates of science and over 50 postgraduate students. Thanks to the company's proactive human resources policy aimed at recruiting the youth, approximately 40% of the technical direction's population are under 35 years of age average age being 42.

In the frame of the extended session of the State commission, 20 employees of NPO Saturn were awarded memorable insignia and letters of award for high results demonstrated in the process of designing new engines.
