OREANDA-NEWS  Russia and China continue to discuss the abolition of import duties on Russian coal, introduced two years ago. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak in response to a question about whether the parties had agreed to lift restrictive measures during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Moscow, TASS reports.

The official acknowledged that Beijing has so far refused to take such a step, but Moscow hopes to continue discussions, since the cancellation would help increase exports of Russian coal.

Recently, the government has been developing a plan to support the coal industry, which is in crisis. Already in 2024, the coal miners received a consolidated loss of 112.6 billion rubles, but in 2025, due to a new price reduction and an increase in the cost of logistics, the situation worsened.

At the end of April, it became known that coal companies are facing record losses when exporting their products. At the same time, experts do not see conditions for improving the market situation.

Chinese import duties related to Beijing's desire to support its own production reduce the possibility of supplying Russian coal. In February, Andrey Panov, the head of the government of the Kemerovo Region, the country's largest coal mining region, pointed out that it would not be possible to cope with the crisis in the industry due to its scale without interstate agreements with China.
