OREANDA-NEWS Finnish Environment and Climate Minister Kai Myukkianen intends to propose a ban on the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia into the country, the regional news service Uutissuomalainen reports.

"The Minister of Environment and Climate Kai Myukkianen intends to propose a ban on the import of liquefied natural gas from Russia through national legislation," Uutissuomalainen reports with reference to the words of the minister.

According to Myukkianen, he will propose to introduce a ban in connection with the implementation of a new package of EU measures on the gas market.

"The package will include a clause providing for a ban that Member states will be able to introduce at will. It can be naturally introduced into the national legislation of Finland," the Minister said.

According to the minister, the import of Russian LNG to Finland may be banned for several years as soon as a package of measures for the development of the EU gas market is adopted. Myukkianen expressed hope that negotiations on this package will be completed by the end of this year.
The Finnish state-owned company Gasum continues to import liquefied natural gas from Russia. The import of pipeline gas from Russia to Finland stopped in May 2022, when Gasum refused to pay for supplies in rubles.
