OREANDA-NEWS  The share of pollock is close to half of the total fish catch in Russia. As of early November, fishermen had already harvested over 2 million tons of the most common type of fish, which is 3.1% higher than last year's record, the Association of Pollock Miners (ADM) told RIA Novosti.

"The share of pollock in the national catch has reached 50%: as of November 3, Russian fishermen have harvested over 2 million tons of the most widespread type of fish in Russia," the association noted.

"The pollock catch in Russia has been at a record high for the second year in a row — above 2 million tons. In all fishing areas of the Far Eastern Fisheries Basin, the catch has already exceeded 2 million tons, which is 3.1% or 60 thousand tons more than in 2025 and 9.2% or 170 thousand tons higher than in 2024," said Alexey Buglak, President of the ADM.

While the main catch area, the Sea of Okhotsk, which accounts for about half of the catch, has slightly decreased, other areas are showing a leading trend.
So, in the West Sakhalin subzone, production doubled – from 20.4 thousand tons in 2025 to 42 thousand tons in 2026, in the Karaginsky subzone, the increase was 28% – from 55 thousand tons in 2025 to 71 thousand tons in 2026, in the North Kuril zone - by 22%, to 139 thousands of tons. The increase in catch was provided by fishing in the Petropavlovsk-Komandorskaya and Vostochno-Sakhalinsk subzones.

"By the end of 2026, we expect the positive dynamics of last year to continue: the catch will remain at the level of 2.2 million tons," the head of the ADM estimates.

At the same time, he recalled that, according to forecasts of fisheries science, in the coming years we can expect a slight decrease in catch to average values, which is associated with a decrease in spawning biomass in the main fishing areas. "At the same time, pollock will remain the most widespread species in the country, and Russia will retain the title of the largest producer of this type of fish," the head of the association added.

Pollock is the main commercial resource in Russia and one of the most popular fish species in the country, the Adm. Today, its share in the "fish basket" of Russians exceeds 20%, and, according to VTsIOM, in 2026, only herring is ahead of it in popularity.
