OREANDA-NEWS Grain transit from Russia through Latvia in January-October of this year amounted to 1 million 115 thousand tons, which is 3.1 times higher than in the same period last year (357 thousand 645 tons), the LETA agency reported on Wednesday, citing data from the Latvian State Revenue Service (VID).
"The largest volume of grain transit from Russia was in October - 425,163 tons, and in September its volumes amounted to 346,952 tons," the report says. The material is provided by the portal tvnet.lv .
"The volume of grain transported in transit from Belarus has increased several times over this period. In ten months of this year, 185,756 tons of grain from Belarus were transported through Latvia, and in the same period last year - 60.8 tons," they added.
According to VID, in 2025, almost 652 thousand tons of grain were transported from Russia, and 128 tons from Belarus.
"Neither the legislation of the European Union nor the legislation of Latvia currently provides for a ban on grain transit," the ministry noted.
As reported, the Latvian authorities planned to raise up to 300% of the transit fee for Russian grain or ban it. But, as stated by Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, it is impossible to do this on your own, only through an EU decision.
It was also reported that on October 13, LatRailNet (the structure of the Latvian state railway operator Latvijas dzelzcels, LDz) decided to increase the fee for using the railway infrastructure for the transit of Russian grain by an average of 25%.
