OREANDA-NEWS In 2024, Italy again became the main producer of wine in the world, displacing France, and Russia became the eleventh and one of the few countries that managed to increase the production of this drink, follows from the materials of the International Organization of Viticulture and Winemaking (OIV), which were studied by RIA Novosti.

Earlier, the organization's CEO, John Barker, said that wine production in the world in 2024 had collapsed to 226 million hectoliters, which was the lowest since 1961.

It is noted that Russia produced 5.4 million hectoliters of this type of alcohol last year, retaining 11th place. At the same time, domestic companies immediately increased production by 19%. Only Georgia (+27%) and Argentina (+23%) were able to show more significant dynamics.

In addition, most major wine producers experienced a decline in output last year, with the largest declines in Brazil (-41%) and Moldova (-40%).

Italy again became the largest wine producer in 2024. In 2023, the country lost the palm to France. However, last year, Italian winemakers increased production by 15% to 44.1 million hectoliters, while the French, on the contrary, faced a 24% reduction in production, to 36.1 million hectoliters.

Spain closes the top three, as well as a year earlier, which produced 31 million hectoliters of wine, which is nine percent more than the level a year earlier. The fourth place was occupied by the United States, whose output decreased by 17% and amounted to 21.1 million hectoliters. Argentina, which immediately increased production by 23% over the year to 10.9 million hectoliters, became the fifth, rising by one position.

The top ten also includes Australia (10.2 million hectoliters), Chile (9.3 million), South Africa (8.8 million), Germany (7.8 million) and Portugal (6.9 million).
