OREANDA-NEWS By the end of April, Italy retained its status as the largest supplier of wine to Russia among European countries. This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to data from the Statistical Service of the European Union (Eurostat).

In the second month of spring, Italy shipped 13.9 million euros worth of wine to Russia. The European country retained its status as the leading exporter of these alcoholic products to the Russian Federation, despite a 13.5 percent reduction in supplies.

Latvia (plus 12.8 percent, up to 9.3 million euros) and Poland (plus 1.2 percent, up to 4.8 million euros) also entered the top 3. France, in turn, dropped out of the top three, dropping to fourth place with a result of 3.8 million euros (minus 20 percent). Spain took the fifth place, reducing shipments to a minimum since December 2023 (to 2.4 million).

Protective duties are increasingly affecting the volume of European wine supplies to Russia. In 2023, duties on wines from Western countries were raised from 12.5 to 20 percent of the customs value, and from August 2024 to 25 percent, but not less than two dollars per liter. Against this background, Georgia has strengthened its position in the Russian market, which Maxim Kashirin, head of the Simple group of companies, called the main competitor of domestic winemakers.
