Russians began to lose interest in tea

OREANDA-NEWS In the first five months of this year, retail sales of tea in Russia decreased significantly. Kommersant writes about this with reference to the data of Evotor (a supplier of cash register equipment and software).
All categories of tea show a decrease. Thus, black tea lost 11 percent year—on—year, green tea lost nine percent, and herbal tea lost ten percent.
The situation is best for green tea bags — minus one percent, while loose black tea shows the worst dynamics — minus 15 percent. It is not possible to link the drop in demand with the rise in prices, since the product has risen in price by only 0.2-1.7 percent over the year.
The Association of Retail Trade Companies (ACORT), which unites large grocery retailers, reported that purchase prices for black tea dropped by ten percent over the year, due to a stronger ruble, which makes it possible to purchase the product cheaper.
Alexander Borisov, CEO of K-Grand (a tea and coffee manufacturer), suggested that the decline in interest in tea has become a global trend. In his opinion, it is possible to maintain sales only due to the variety of the assortment. This opinion is confirmed by data from Evotor, which records a 57 percent increase in sales of alternative teas, including matcha and puer, over the past year.
At the same time, there is no transition of customers to coffee, since its sales, according to the "Check Index" of the OFD Platform (operator of fiscal data), decreased by 13 percent over the year. However, in this case, the increase in product prices, outstripping overall inflation, could have affected.
Earlier, the head of the Russian Coffee Association, Ramaz Chanturia, said that Russians are buying less and less coffee with them and are switching to home-made drinks.
