OREANDA-NEWS According to the results of the first quarter of 2025, rum turned out to be the fastest growing alcohol category on the Russian market. A noticeable increase in the demand of citizens for this type of alcohol is reported by Kommersant, citing data from Nielsen analysts.
In annual terms, natural rum sales in the country increased by 17.5 percent, and monetary sales by 19.5 percent. The dynamics of sales of other types of alcohol was lower. Thus, sales of gin increased by 9.2 percent during the reporting period, bitters — by 8.6 percent, and whiskey — by 7.8 percent, experts explained. In general, the market of strong alcohol in the Russian Federation has decreased by 16.2 percent during this time, Rosalokoltabakcontrol clarified.
Analysts attributed the increase in rum sales to a number of factors. They cited the activity of local manufacturers and distributors launching new brands as the reasons for this dynamic. However, experts noted that the main increase was provided by cheap varieties that are close in value to vodka. Tatspirtprom also noted a general change in the taste preferences of Russians. Previously, citizens preferred mostly vodka, but now they increasingly prefer "more flavorful" alcoholic beverages.
Sales of this kind of alcohol have been growing in Russia for several years. By the end of 2024, sales of cognac, whiskey, rum, gin and tequila increased by 10.2 percent compared to 2023. As a result, the consumption of such drinks in the country reached 3.2 liters per year per capita. At the same time, retail sales of vodka remained at the level of 2023 (5.3 liters per capita).
