OREANDA-NEWS  A powerful 5.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, December 30. A natural disaster in the Pacific Ocean is reported on the website of the European—Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).

The tremors occurred at 22:22 local time (14:22 Moscow time). Their epicenter was located 81 kilometers south of the city of Panguna with a population of about 2.9 thousand people. The hearth was located at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Earlier in the day, a slightly stronger earthquake was recorded in Japan. Seismologists estimated its magnitude at 5.5. The epicenter was located 20 kilometers northeast of the settlement of Vadomari with a population of approximately 6.9 thousand people.
